Clara pressed the moss; its slick tenacity slid under her thumb, and her first step skated sideways, forcing her to surrender the idea of walking straight across. A brittle side branch, once promising as a handhold, bent under her pull and dropped into pooled darkness.

A digital chirp cut through the patter above. Forrest stepped beneath the canopy gap, dug out a blister pack, and took a quick dose of allergy tablets. The pause lasted only minutes, yet the drizzle thickened, and the log’s surface now shone with overexposed glare. A faint penumbra edged every contour where shadow had been soft before. He returned, noticing that the flat rock beside the trunk had been rocked loose by the soaking ground. If the rain had stopped earlier, the bark would have offered grip. Clara dragged a thicker fallen limb from the debris zone; the limb had been buried beneath damp leaves, but its core felt solid. Together they wedged it under the trunk, levering a wobbling platform that rose just enough to give each boot a perch.

Clara climbed first, weight balanced, then Forrest followed. Mid-crossing, the improvised support cracked, tilting one end of the trunk. A hidden pocket opened beneath the root plate, and a pale glow slipped inside, revealing herbaceous shoots glistening like miniature lamps in the shallow cave. They exchanged a brief nod and continued along the far side clearing, rain peppering their jackets as the forest dimmed behind them. Neither of them saw the broken limb slide free and drift silently into the deepening shadow at the base of the log.
