English 原文
The projector beam glowed across the oval table, but a thin puddle twinkled on the carpet near the water cooler. His aunt Flora had reserved the meeting room, checking the timer on her laptop while her nephew Ned unrolled the white screen. A photograph of a stone cottage faded in and out because the cable jerked each time someone stepped near it. Beneath the water cooler, the reservoir leaned forward, letting warmth from the room loosen its valve enough for drops to gather. When the drops linked into a stream, the water curved under the chairs and headed straight for the power strip. Flora grabbed a stack of recycled paper towels. She pressed them against the line of water, hoping the fibers would drink it up before it reached the plug.
The soaked towels darkened quickly, yet the stream rebuilt itself along a different groove in the carpet. Ned spotted a roll of masking tape and tried securing the valve, but the damp plastic refused to hold. He then slid four quarters under the cooler’s front feet. The small coins lifted the base half a finger’s width, redirecting the flow toward the corridor. The new path brushed against the threshold and trickled left, away from the socket, but toward the reception rug. A clipboard dropped earlier by another team lay flat on the laminate floor. The water climbed its edge, veering faster like rain along a gutter. Flora lifted the clipboard and wedged the hallway door partly shut. The makeshift wooden gate slowed the liquid into a lazy pool.
Hours later, after the last keyboards fell silent, no one remained in the corridor. The meeting room lights had been switched off, cables lay coiled, and the cottage image waited inside the blank projector. The masking tape still clung loosely to the valve, and the quarters continued to tilt the cooler. By evening, a thin ribbon of water kept sliding along the warm laminate toward the floor drain beside the doorframe.
