English 原文
Cold water clung to Zara’s palm as she swept it across a thin wet streak under the front desks. The crescent, bright against the dull linoleum, looked like a footprint blurred by a hurried turn. A low fluorescent hum filled the empty classroom, broken by distant squeaks from the playground swings and the steady patter of rain on high windows. Occasional hollow drips punctuated the larger drizzle; each tap echoed along metal chair legs. Above the cupboards, a cardboard model of a marina rattled whenever wind squeezed through a loose pane; tiny plastic boats trembled with every vibration. One ceiling tile had been loosened by last week’s repairs, and it thumped gently whenever the building shivered. Far in the corridor, lockers answered with soft metallic groans, then hush returned, leaving the damp trace glimmering in the overhead buzz.
Zara followed the splashes into the corridor, sneakers squeaking in sync with muffled bell chimes rehearsed by the public-address speaker. The stairwell air carried a drawn-out hiss where water met old pipes. A lone locker door slammed, its clang sounding almost like outrage before silence rearranged itself. Ten minutes remained before the next bell; Zara hoped to dry the floor and keep the paperwork outside the office doorway safe. She ducked into the supply closet, but the mop bucket was wedged behind crates, and the handle grated against shelving. The hinge complained, yet refused to swing wide enough. After two tries she shifted her weight, pressed her shoulder sideways, and the frame yielded; the bucket rolled out, sloshing a miniature deluge against its rim.
She hurried back, rhythm of dripping louder now, but the trail stopped short of the ceiling drain. Tilting the bucket toward the crescent, she noticed that the water grew no wider; instead, a channel of droplets led toward the windowsill. Zara lifted the cardboard marina. Under its dock, a plastic bag had torn, releasing the torrential leak from a bottle once filled for geography class. The discovery made her laugh; no roof fault existed to confess to the caretaker after all. She propped the model upright, set the bottle inside an empty tray, and placed felt pads under the boats so they stayed quiet. The bell rang sharp against the walls as she dragged the dry edge of her sleeve across the crescent that had faded to a pale stain.
