A yellow bucket, a caramel-colored plastic shovel, and a half-filled water bottle leaned against the wooden frame of the sandbox, their shadows stretching across the ochre rubber ground. Pia crouched inside that rectangle of sun-baked timber, piling damp sand into a low fort. The larger community shovel had been borrowed at the other corner by Jude, so her smaller scoop forced her to carve thin layers. Each hurried swipe made the tower flounder; grain after grain slid back to the base. She pressed her palms flat, deciding to slow down, letting the grains pack tighter. A copper glimmer from the metal slide flickered beside her as she worked, and she paused to savor the faint warmth radiating through the gritty mixture, the way sand shifted yet held together when patience guided her touch.

An amber-striped rubber ball broke the calm with a dull bounce, striking the bench behind her. The impact toppled her lunch box; a small wheat roll cracked open so cleanly it looked as though someone had chosen that moment to break bread for a hidden picnic. The ball rolled on, stopping against the low fence. A pair of older kids waved from beyond the rope net, waiting. Without thinking, Pia scooped the sphere under one arm and trotted across the springy ground, crumbs scattering from her shirt. By the time she returned, sun had edged west and the fort’s outer skin had dried into a light crust, while the inside stayed dark and soft. The changed texture refused to match her original plan, so she adapted: fingers traced new windows where fissures already appeared. She meant to wrap up soon, but first she was reaching for the bucket again, fingers hovering above its warm brim.
