Dale aimed for the only dry seat, yet a taller boy dropped onto it first; humid air pushed by the moving swing carried a faint canvas whiff from the boy’s jacket. Waiting, Dale sniffed sudden mineral dampness announced by drifting drizzle. Water had already been trapped inside the second seat, and every slow arc pushed out a rusty tang. He nudged that basin-shaped seat anyway, only to meet a splash of brown rainwater.

She noticed Dale wiping his hands and stepped toward the sandbox, where shaded sand held a toasted breadcrumb fragrance beneath a plastic canopy. Together they trudged there, shoes squeezing moist grain odors from the rubber edging. Another obstacle surfaced: the bright bucket was missing, and only a bent trowel lay among clumpy sand breathing wet earth. Deeper digging sent up a sudden brackish puff; Dale’s fingers touched a smooth clam shell still carrying seaside saltiness. He rinsed it at the water fountain, the flow leaving a cold iron taste across his tongue. Back at the mound, he placed the shell on top and gave the bucket one last follow through, swinging damp sand in a wide arc. A yellowthroat flashed past the climbing structure base, its wings stirring sharp cedar scent from a low bush and scattering droplets over the tower. The swing Dale wanted earlier creaked empty behind them, yet a mild oceanic hint lingered around the shell in the fresh rain.
