English 原文
The misting bottle hissed against the jar's rim, and fine droplets tapped the glass like quiet rain. Reed kept his elbow steady, giving the moss a judicious sweep of moisture before guiding a blue-green patch through the wide mouth with tweezers. The gravel beneath already shimmered pale silver, and a thin thread of water trickled toward the charcoal layer. A pebble waited on the soil, ready to anchor the ferns, yet the position looked uncertain—the slight slope invited it to roll. Reed angled the magnifying glass, but warm breath fogged the pane, hiding the situation inside for a moment. He had prepared carefully: the gravel had been rinsed, the charcoal had been spread evenly, and the soil had been pressed to a smooth surface.
Suddenly, the cuckoo clock on the shelf proclaimed two o’clock, its wooden bird popping out with a hollow clatter. At the same instant, the doorbell chimed; an adult neighbour stepped in, waving a folded questionnaire from the community garden and asking for quick answers. The task felt like an unexpected inquiry, yet Reed followed the neighbour to the corridor, leaving the jar uncapped beside the open window where Lucia adjusted the blinds. A fresh gust of cool air slipped through the gap, brushing past the damp interior. During Reed’s brief absence, the temperature around the jar dropped; a translucent film bloomed across the inside surface, turning the arrangement into a grey blur. Condensation gathered, merged into beads, and began sliding downward, loosening the upper edge of soil.
Reed returned, closing the front door behind him just as a large droplet landed with a muted thud, tilting the waiting pebble. Instead of lifting the lid in alarm, he set two fingertips against the glass to feel the chill, then eased a thin bamboo skewer through the mouth. With patient twists he nudged the pebble into a shallow pocket, directing its weight to seal the crumbling rim. The soil darkened but held; the dripping slowed, finding new paths along the gravel where it could harmlessly drain. Reed replaced the lid, leaving a narrow gap so the interior could warm gradually rather than fog again.
On the sill, a small silver-blue fly rubbed its legs and drifted upward, tracing the faint plume of warmer air rising from the jar.
