Where the Ladder Pressed-

English 原文
Honeyed juice dried on fallen pears, giving off a thick sugary tang that hit Willa’s nose immediately. She raised the three-rung ladder above one shoulder, muscles taut, while balancing a half-full basket against her hip. The ladder had been repaired with fresh nails after last season, yet its frame still creaked under her grip. The day’s simple regimen called for three more apples before the walk to the sorting table. A nearby branch offered exactly that number, glowing red behind leaves. When she planted the ladder, one wooden foot sank into springy turf, tilting the steps and making her ankle roll inward. She steadied herself, climbed, and reached; the branch swayed away, every apple sliding just past the last length of her fingers. Frustration took shape in the way she slapped her palm against the bark, then climbed back down. A squirrel sprinted across the canopy and kicked two unripe pears onto the grass. Behind her, Zeke appeared, his own empty basket swinging like a pendulum beside his knee.
Pale lichen patched the trunks, its surface flaking under passing elbows. Above, leaves brushed together with a faint papery rasp, and shifting coins of sunlight hopped across the grass as branches moved. Warm air carried the dusty sweetness of cut grass mixed with bruised fruit. A robin rustled inside the bramble border, knocking a dry berry onto moss. Farther off, other pickers called out numbers, their voices merging with the steady hum of wasps circling damaged windfalls.
The ladder tilted once more as its foot dived into mud, and Willa’s knees jolted sideways. If the ground were firmer, they could finish faster. Instead, Zeke slid the ladder onto a basalt outcrop lying flat beneath wild grass. The rock stayed still, letting her climb while he planted both boots against the side rail. She pinched an apple, but the branch recoiled; Zeke gripped a farther twig, courageous strain lining his forearms, and drew it close. The apple came free yet carried a round bird hole, so they placed it among the bruised fruit without a word. After two quicker repeats, six clean apples now crowned the basket. They stepped back, and twin hollows in the mud framed the stone where the ladder had stood.
