Instead, Zeke slid the ladder onto a basalt outcrop lying flat beneath wild grass. The rock stayed still, letting her climb while he planted both boots against the side rail. She pinched an apple, but the branch recoiled; Zeke gripped a farther twig, courageous strain lining his forearms, and drew it close. The apple came free yet carried a round bird hole, so they placed it among the bruised fruit without a word. After two quicker repeats, six clean apples now crowned the basket. They stepped back, and twin hollows in the mud framed the stone where the ladder had stood.
