"Spirals all across the disc," Maeve said.

She leaned closer, the silver light from the window outlining each thin groove that circled the wheel like ripples on still water. A cool column of clay landed with a soft thud, and the motor’s hum deepened when her foot pressed the pedal. Water from the basin slid over her fingers; for a moment the clay glided smoothly, yet the base began to drift. The concentric pattern stayed beneath but the clay crept sideways, refusing to center, and the wobble did not vanish even after she slowed the spin. Her palms swept inward again, yet a faint tremor ran through the wheel centre, scattering droplets onto the splash pan and forcing her to lift the misshapen lump away.

She carried the lump to the clay-prep area, rolling it over a granite slab whose grey surface glittered under shadow depth. The block still held some tenderness, so she wedged it slowly, turning until trapped air sighed out. A wooden rib waited in the tool jar; she had chosen it because its curved edge echoed the chrysalis-shaped vase drying on the top shelf. Returning to the wheel, she pressed the clay firmly, sealing it, then raised a low wall. Small rings re-emerged—this time intentional—and their aesthetic appeal grew with every steady rise of her knuckles. If the speed stayed low, the moisture would remain, and the wall would not crack. She had planned a shallow bowl for mixing slips, and now the form kept its shape while the earlier tremor had been tamed. Maeve lifted the foot pedal, and the clay that had wobbled before revolved in a calm, even circle.

她把土團帶到備土區，在閃著灰光的花崗石板上滾揉；土塊仍保有些許柔軟，她慢慢反覆折壓，直到被困的空氣嘶嘶逸出。工具罐裡的木肋板曲線像晾架上那只蛹形花瓶，她取來備用。回到轉盤，她將黏土狠實按緊，隨即拉起低矮杯壁。小圈紋再次浮現——這回是刻意為之——隨著指節的一次次抬升，外觀愈發迷人。若轉速保持緩慢，水分便能留存，杯壁也不會龜裂。她原想做一只調色用的淺碗，此刻形態終於穩住，而先前的顫動已被制服。梅芙鬆開踏板，那團先前晃動的黏土此時以平穩均勻的圓周轉動。
