English 原文
Plop, plop—each drop from the overhanging branch struck the wide puddle with a calm mantra of sound. Floyd crouched on a dry island of stone while his older cousin Cal waited a few steps back, boots quiet on slick gravel. Near the mud margin, a thin pink body eased from the soaked earth; at first glance it looked like an ordinary worm, its skin shiny as a damp feather. The surface around it felt cool and smooth under Floyd’s fingertips, yet the mud itself clung in a gritty film. Another drop landed; ripples travelled across the glassy water and nudged the creature toward the evaporation edge, where the shrinking puddle left fresh rings of grainy silt.
By the time the sky brightened, Floyd finally reached for his sketch pad. Goal-wise, he wanted a handful of leaf prints showing the puddle’s layered texture for tomorrow’s art class, but the paper turned floppy in the moisture, and graphite slipped across the damp sheet. He shifted his weight; the stone under his knee wobbled, and water washed over the pink creature. If he had hurried back to his bag, the split in the tiny skin would have gone unseen. Instead, he watched as a persistent crack widened; a delicate head appeared, then four jointed legs, and at last wet, folded wings. The “worm” was a dragonfly nymph completing its climb from water to air. Floyd slid a flat leaf beneath the emerging insect so it could dry without sinking, letting the broken husk float aside like a spent envelope. The sketch forgotten, he traced the network of new wings with a steady gaze while sunlight firmed them.
Hours later, the puddle lay reduced to a shallow stamp, and damp air had thinned into ordinary breeze. A passing jogger nudged the brittle shell of the dragonfly nymph deeper into the cooling mud with a shoe tip.
