The Garden's Sudden Splash-

English 原文
A shallow trench curved halfway around the rounded stone, damp soil already heaped on Nadia’s left boot as she pressed the garden fork under the edge. Vaughn, knees bent over the planting hole, measured depth with a tape before returning to watering cans. Nadia wiped grit from her palms, grabbed the long branch, and slid a flat piece of plank beneath it to act as fulcrum. The bark bit into her shoulder when she leaned, and the branch bent rather than lifting the stone. Under the force, the thin plank cracked, sprang upward, and a small grey rock popped loose. It skittered across mulch, bumped a second stone, and that one rolled until it touched the metal whisk lying near the tool corner—an old utensil once part of a university restaurant supply box now repurposed for mixing compost.
Nadia adjusted her stance, the strain stretching down her calves, but a sharp doorbell from the house broke her rhythm. She straightened, spine stiff, and hurried along the path, leaving the branch tilted against the half-exposed stone. Inside, she signed for a parcel; the delay lasted only a few minutes, yet cool air inside let warmth drain from her arms. When she returned, morning light had shifted. The loosened soil had flattened, and the branch’s tip had sunk deeper into the soft earth, wedging at a lower angle. A breeze tried to whisk away fine mulch, dusting the lever with specks. The stone now showed darker wet patches, proof of moisture creeping upward during her absence, much like a sapling’s coming of age marked by new rings.
She cleared extra soil from the sunken side with the trowel, then searched the path edge for a sturdier pivot. A broad chunk of scrap timber, thicker than the cracked plank, felt heavy against her thigh but solid. She wedged it close to the stone, repositioned the branch, and pushed again. The timber stayed firm; the stone rose a finger’s breadth, enough for the earlier runaway rock to slip beneath and hold the gap. The branch sprang back, its end tapping a bucket, which rocked and sent a thin sheet of water washing over the mulch before Nadia caught it. She laid the branch across the grass with a soft exhale. Near the branch, leftover water kept seeping through the loosened soil toward the bed’s edge.
