English 原文
Nolan expected the moss under his palm to spring back like loose foam, yet it squished flat and clung to his skin. Rain had softened the whole trunk all morning, and the knee-high barrier now glimmered in the open daylight. He wanted to step over it and keep the walk moving, so he planted one boot on a flat rock beside the trail. The stone rocked under his weight and tipped; his ankle rolled, arms shooting wide to catch balance. Felix, standing close behind, stopped short, the woven handle of a small berry basket pressing into his hip. A brief shout of elation burst from them both when Nolan kept upright, but the log still blocked the way, its slick surface waiting.
Felix scanned the branch debris zone and tugged out a limb as long as his arm. The bark had been stripped by the fall, leaving pale wood that felt steady under a wet grip. If the stick broke, he would lose balance, so he slid both hands apart to spread the load. Together they leaned the branch across the trunk like a narrow ramp, then Nolan tested it with one boot, shifting his weight forward a fraction at a time. The branch flexed, but it stayed firm; drops gathered on its underside and fell in slow rhythm. Crimson berry juice from the basket smeared across Nolan’s sleeve as he guided it over. A carved starfish charm, tied to the basket for luck, tapped the wood each time the basket swayed. Step by step, both friends crossed, knees bent, backs low, the branch humming softly under strain. They had not noticed the wobbling stone behind them.
The moment their feet found the firmer far-side clearing, a gust shook the canopy gap, and a heavy droplet struck the improvised ramp; the branch twitched sideways by a finger’s width and slid deeper into the moss.
