While Thea fetched spare tape, a striped cat brushed the block support and shifted two wooden props. The middle ramp sagged, flattening just before a turn and stealing the speed her fix required. York stepped from the hallway and caught the hanging tube, his bare palms sensing its mild vibration. Surprise raised his eyebrows, yet he gripped the soft cardboard until Thea knelt beside him. She folded the linen twice, creating a thicker pad, and slid it under the loosened support blocks. York pressed the blocks down, the cloth giving gentle grip that rough pine alone lacked. The cat crouched under the lamp’s warm circle, tail tapping the carpet like a slow drum. It rattled through the repaired gap and rang against the bowl, glass against metal bright in the quiet room.
