English 原文
The starting ramp stood firm, but the middle platform sagged slightly toward the carpet below. Hazel knelt, knees sinking into the warm pile, while a wary tabby crouched three steps away watching. Near the supply pile, an adult sorted wooden blocks by height, leaving Hazel to handle the finer adjustments. Her goal was simple: raise the platform enough so the marble could clear the sharp turn and keep rolling. She had rinsed dust from the marble under the kitchen faucet, and cool droplets still dotted its glass surface. First, she slid a thin paperback—eight millimetres thick—under the slipping tube and lowered the marble. It rolled farther yet drifted to a stop just before the turn, lacking an ounce of momentum.
Next, Hazel arched her back, reached behind, and swapped the paperback for a chunky wooden block twelve millimetres tall. The combined height now measured twenty millimetres, and the marble almost escaped the dip before sliding backwards again. If the tube sat any lower, the marble would freeze there every single time again. While the cat's tail twitched, an insight appeared: the surface itself needed a gentler angle, not just more lift. Hazel shifted her weight forward, pressed one palm against the tube, and wedged a folded postcard adding five extra millimetres. As she released the pressure, the support stack held firm, and the tube leaned downward by a hair. This time the marble shot through the sag, clattered around the sharp turn, and zipped into the landing bowl.
Before Hazel could breathe out, the tabby sprang across the carpet, paws thudding near the new stack. Vibration rippled underneath; the postcard slipped halfway, and the tube sagged again though only by a fraction. Hazel steadied the ramp with both forearms, shoulders tightening, while the cat circled the landing bowl sniffing the spinning glass. A fresh strip of red tape now angled across the loosened joint where the postcard showed a white edge.
