English 原文
Only three fine-grit strips hung on the pegboard; the thicker grades already curled in the waste bin. Finn braced his forearm, pressed a fresh strip against the pine block, and counted twenty strokes. Each push warmed his palm and sent sawdust drifting in a thin meander across the metal bench. The vice handle gave a short metallic note when he tightened it, yet the reference block still felt smoother. A pale bloom of honey color began to spread where the grain opened, proof that the first face was almost ready but not fully there.
He rotated the block. The coarse corner had been flattened earlier, and a faint groove had been etched by mistake. Finn chose a medium strip and worked the edge until the ridge shrank by a finger’s breadth. Sawdust collected along the clamp jaw, its pattern seeming to mimic the curved grain. Just then the clamp shifted; the sudden twist jolted his elbow. The loose dust brush slid, tapped his wrist, and bounced forward. Wooden handle struck the linseed-oil jar; glass rang once and rolled toward the pegboard. Strips above began to sway, brushing together like leaves after a distant cloudburst had passed, while the jar wobbled on its base.
Sable, oiling a finished panel nearby, stepped sideways and steadied the jar before it could topple. The motion stopped the small chain, but Finn had lost track of which faces were done. He lifted the block, fingers gripping only unsanded edges, and compared it at the touch-test zone. Two faces now matched the smooth reference exactly, yet the last still caught his skin. He returned, made ten light passes with the final strip, and the surface shifted under his thumb from faint grit to even glide in one clean moment. Finn laid the warm, thinned strip beside the vice. Along the patio edge, a curl of sawdust drifted outward on a slow diagonal.
