Dust-Lifted Curve-

English 原文
A thin pine plank lay across the vice, its pale grain catching light this morning. Beside it, a steady rasp told Suki that Clyde was already shaping his own piece at the neighbouring bench. The instructor at the far table spoke softly about sanding rhythm, his words nearly lost beneath sandpaper hiss and the floor's faint tremor. A tick from the glue timer broke each pause, like a metronome guiding unseen music. Suki leaned close; pencil lines lay across the plank, waiting for the first careful cut today. A light rustle warned of loose sawdust drifting in from the open yard door nearby. The dust whispered over the surface, burying the marks until only a muted blur remained. She blew across the board in a short breath, scraping with her fingertip to uncover the thin graphite stripe. Even before she finished, another hush of grains swept in and smothered the stripe again.
She had often compared marking to writing in a laboratory book, exact and repeatable, yet today the studio tested that belief. A mistake would shorten the plank forever, so she waited until the hush calmed, then lifted a stubby paintbrush from the tray. Careful strokes whisked the grains aside, and she tilted the board toward the window to check her work. A fainter line appeared beneath the first, overturning her earlier assumption about where the blade could travel. The alternate curve had been hidden beneath dust, waiting for sharper eyes amid the swirling particles.
It looked older, perhaps drawn by a classmate who had moved on to another board. Suki tapped the wood; the tone rang uneven, hinting at a slight warp near the hidden curve. Understanding rose through that hollow note, and she shifted the brush to reveal the older path completely. She chose the deeper groove and slid the saw teeth into it with measured care. To steady the plank, she set a short copper culvert segment on the far end, using its weight as a quiet anchor. She kept pressing the blade forward, listening for the steady hush of metal against wood.
