A tick from the glue timer broke each pause, like a metronome guiding unseen music. Suki leaned close; pencil lines lay across the plank, waiting for the first careful cut today. A light rustle warned of loose sawdust drifting in from the open yard door nearby. The dust whispered over the surface, burying the marks until only a muted blur remained. She blew across the board in a short breath, scraping with her fingertip to uncover the thin graphite stripe. Even before she finished, another hush of grains swept in and smothered the stripe again.
