English 原文
The blue well was still full, but a thin green smear stretched across the silver-grey newspaper. Sara and Grey froze at the mark; the adult washing dishes behind them kept humming, unaware. Sara’s caring fingertip slid along the tray rim, tracing where the colour must have dripped. Both sticks near the smear carried damp sheen, and one tremble ran through Grey’s wrist as he lifted the closest. A darker stratum already floated in the pure blue: a faint yellow swirl that threatened to spread. Grey rinsed the stick in the jar, yet the water had been clouded by earlier mixes, so brown tint clung stubbornly to the wood. They worked in near silence, trying to sustain the clarity of each primary while small rings of paint bloomed whenever a drop landed on the cool, reflective surface of the tray.
If they mixed too much blue, the turquoise would drown the brightness they wanted for a sea-shell sketch, so they chose to conserve every remaining hint of yellow. Sara had already dipped one stick into red earlier, and the well beside it still showed a pink whirlpool; switching tools felt safer than risking that memory of colour. Blocked by the murky rinse jar, Grey reached for a fresh cup, but no spare sat nearby. Instead, he folded a paper towel into a thick pad, pressed the damp stick between layers, and twisted; most of the stain lifted away slowly, fibre by fibre. With a clean tip, he returned to the blue well and skimmed only a trace, then let it fall into an empty mixing well beside the bright yellow. A soft stir followed, and the green smear on the newspaper suddenly made sense—it was warning, not decoration. Their new mix shone cooler than expected under the overhead light, yet the test strip, carried carefully across the table, dried into the exact sea-glass shade they sought. Sara placed the craft stick on the newspaper edge, and the rinse water kept circling inside the glass jar.
