English 原文
The sunlit half of the bench armrest felt warm, but the shaded half cooled Kira’s forearm. Threads in six bright colours stretched between the metal and a stripe of fraying tape, their waxy surfaces sliding over her fingertips. She had practised the chevron pattern many times at home, and the threads had been arranged from light to dark for her friend Maeve. Hollis sat close, elbows grazing Kira’s sleeve each time she checked length against her wrist-test zone. A tiny tremor passed through Kira’s elbows as she tightened a forward knot; then the tape’s edge lifted. The adhesive clung to her cotton cuff and yanked the fan sideways, pulling the rows off-line. She pinched the tape back down, yet some stickiness had been softened by the sun and refused to hold.
She leaned forward, shifting her balance so the working thread stayed taut while she reached for the loose end. At that moment a gust skimmed over the grass. It tipped the dangling strands like garnish scattered across a culinary display, and two neighbouring colours twisted around each other. Nearby, a family picnic clanged as a camping saucepan rolled. Scents of grilled bread and herb garnish drifted past, smelling quintessentially of street-market summers and recalling every busy culinary tradition she knew. The tangle tightened with each wobble of her fingertips. Kira tried teasing the knot apart, but the loosened tape slid again, making the band curve like a bent arrow. A dull weight pressed between her shoulders until Hollis steadied the fan with one thumb, offering silent balance.
While Hollis held the threads, Kira noticed the curled tape edge still clinging to her cuff. The remaining tack gripped cloth firmly, even after losing strength on metal. She shifted posture, pressed the sticky flap over the loose, wind-stirred ends, and smoothed it along their length. The same cling that had distorted the pattern now pinned every strand in a neat fan, freeing both hands. A short stretch of knots later, the bracelet reached the wrist-test zone; the stripes aligned cleanly along her skin. Hollis lifted his thumb, and nothing shifted. Kira unhooked the working strand, rolled it into a loose loop, and placed it on the warm half of the armrest. A soft flutter lifted the free ends, yet the loop stayed still beside the tape.
