Inside the hollow core, loose pieces tapped an uneven beat each time a gust strained the kite line, and the string itself lifted a wavering whistle above the hilltop hush. Over the bench, the diamond kite flashed as luminescent nylon snapped, then flew silent when the wind evened out. Quinn and aunt Darla listened; the handle twitched, stalled, and a dull thunk choked the buzzing note. For one frozen moment the line stayed tight, yet no thread slipped forward.

Heath passed over slim tweezers borrowed from Darla’s sewing pouch, their tips clicking while Quinn knelt by the jammed spindle. He teased the first crossed loop free; about ten centimetres slipped clear with a quiet sigh, but the handle refused to budge. A deeper scrape came from inside the reel. Tilting the plastic toward the light, Quinn first mistook the blockage for a crack, then realised twisted layers of string caused the stop. Another gentle tug let a second loop unravel, adding perhaps fifteen centimetres. Above, the kite slumped and its fabric rustled; Quinn chose to keep working while Heath stepped backward, arms wide to hold a thinning tension.

One last loop bit hard against the ridge. Quinn eased the tweezers under it, lifted, and the knot gave with a dry pop. The reel spun free, whirring like a tiny motor; released line rushed skyward, and the kite leapt, cloth snapping into a steady drone. The stone bench trembled, then stilled as Heath steadied the reel. They marked the weakened section with a small knot and walked downhill, bright tail trailing behind.

By evening, broad shadows stretched over the empty crest, and the once-humming string lay coiled beside the stone seat. A lone sheep nosed the silent reel, tipping it against the stone.
