English 原文
A faint square of clear glass floated on the upper pane, where yesterday’s giraffe outline had vanished into silver mist. Eli pressed his palm to the cool wood frame and searched for any surviving curve. Beside him, Greta balanced on the sill shelf, steam from her tea drifting upward, and raised a damp fingertip toward the same bright gap; she wanted that spot for looping letters copied from a birthday ceremony invitation. Rain tapped above them in broken rhythm, and the condensation near the frame edge grew thicker, promising longer-lasting marks. The single patch of clarity offered the sharpest street view, so both leaned closer, breath fogging the zone before each planned stroke.
Eli moved first, sketching the round hat of a cheerful zookeeper, then pausing so Greta could sweep a letter C beside the hat brim. Their alternating rhythm tangled when a droplet gathered on the upper pane, swelled, and began its slow tumble straight through the tiny scene. They watched, shoulders nearly touching, as the bead sliced the zookeeper’s sleeve and smeared Greta’s fresh curve. Somewhere behind them, soft laughter drifted from a hallway television, blending with the rain’s uneven patter that rose and fell like distant applause. A narrow lane between their drawings was being nibbled away by the drips, yet neither stepped back.
In the lull between two louder bursts on the gutter, Greta lowered her hand and traced the remaining letters quickly, timing each stroke during the brief stillness before new droplets formed. Eli waited, warmth from the radiator reaching his knuckles, then re-entered during the next quiet pause to rebuild the zookeeper’s jacket. Their improvised schedule—draw, wait, draw—kept the pane orderly, and the picture and text settled side by side while fresh moisture collected elsewhere. A final breath clouded the centre, hiding both works for a moment, then cleared to show the tidy result before the first faint smear returned. At the same moment downstairs, a crowd on the radio roared and real applause crackled through the kitchen speaker.
