A drawn-out creak slid across the playground air as the seesaw tilted, the metal pivot complaining with every slow degree. Zane gripped the hot handle; a faint rattle travelled through the tube into his palms, and a dull thud rose when his lower end bumped the rubber bumper. Across the plank, Jude rose toward the high end, sneakers scraping, the hinge whining between them. Their simple aim stayed clear: keep the plank level for sixty seconds so Jude’s stopwatch reading could qualify for an extra-credit physics chart. Yet imbalance shouted through each noise; Zane’s side remained down, weight magnified by his backpack wedged behind him. He nudged it with one heel, but the strap was trapped. The leash of a small terrier had been knotted tightly around the loop, and the leash twanged like a tight guitar string, barking ricocheting under the slide. Sweat slid past Zane’s temple as the echoes bounced back.

The bumper beneath Jude’s feet bounced again, producing a low rubbery groan that made the terrier growl once more. Jude tried sliding farther from the handle to stretch his lever arm, but his shift overshot; the opposite end smacked down, springs inside the worn bumper wheezing. The plank had been stained by countless shoes, and the smooth patch near its centre allowed the backpack to glide. The very object blocking balance revealed another possibility. Zane and Jude began to collaborate without words: Zane dragged the loaded pack and the attached terrier a few centimetres toward the fulcrum, Jude shuffled outward until the squeaks shortened and merged into near silence. Weight that hindered now served; both ends hovered while chains on distant swings chimed a soft counter-rhythm. Even the terrier appeared to benefit from the calmer ride, ears upright instead of jolted by sudden bumps. Zane’s stopwatch clicked on, counting with tiny metallic taps.

The seconds crawled in muffled beats through the warm handle. If the terrier moved again, the plank would tilt, yet the leash held firm and only its paws shifted. Fifty seconds arrived with a muted grind from the pivot; at sixty, the stopwatch tone pulsed once, then fell quiet. Jude exhaled, shoulders loosening while the seesaw hummed gently in place. At the same moment, two pigeons on the slide’s sheet-metal roof shuffled against a brief gust; the thin panel rang, and the birds flapped twice before balance returned above the painted ladder.

秒數在溫熱的把手裡緩慢跳動。如果獵犬再度亂動，板子就會傾斜，但牽繩保持緊繃，它只換了換腳。五十秒時，支點悶悶地磨了一聲；六十秒時，秒錶發出短促訊號，隨即歸於靜默。Jude 吐氣，肩膀放鬆，而蹺蹺板輕輕嗡鳴地保持原位。就在同一刻，兩隻鴿子在溜滑梯鐵皮屋頂上對抗一陣微風，薄金屬板叮然震動，鴿子拍了兩下翅膀後，再次在彩漆梯子上方保持平衡。
