Mae perched on the high end, her trainers hovering above the scuffed landing zone while Cyrus anchored the low side. The steel-grey column of the fulcrum groaned each time they shifted, and thin vibration travelled through the curved metal handles. Rough patches where paint had peeled pressed against Mae’s palms, yet she kept her grip and slid a few centimetres forward. The plank tilted toward balance, lifted once more, then paused in an uneasy hover above the ground. A light scent from Cyrus’s backpack—an apple beginning to ripen in the heat—drifted between them, mixing with the smell of warm rubber.

A swallowtail butterfly drifted near the sand border, its wings flashing silver-blue each time it shifted direction. The speckled dog tied to the bench jerked free, barking, and toppled two water bottles from the playground furniture. Liquid spread across the rubber surface, so Mae leapt off her end and Cyrus followed, the balance collapsing with a dull thud. They hurried after the dog, weaving past the column of swing shadows, until Cyrus clipped the loose leash under the bench. By the time they reached the seesaw again, blown sand coated Mae’s seat and the handles felt nearly too hot to grip.

Mae dragged the edge of her sleeve over the gritty wood, sweeping most of the sand toward the landing zone. A fourth silver screw now glinted beside the earlier trio, and the simple line of threes expanded into an arrow pointing inward. The hidden marker suggested a balance spot nearer the centre, so she shuffled backward until the new screw lay under her knees. Cyrus responded by edging outward, letting rough wood scrape softly beneath his palms while the seesaw steadied in mid-air. At the same moment, beyond the fulcrum’s shadow, the swallowtail circled above the motionless dog and drifted toward the sandbox. Mae wrapped her sleeve around the heated handle and nudged the plank into a smooth, level glide.
