Lyle slid the cooler door open, releasing a gust of crisp air that swirled around his sleeves. Honey-gold lamps over the wrapping station cast a warm path across the tiles, while inside the cooler the last six peach roses waited beside a damp floral foam block. He had already counted five stems for one farewell bouquet, yet the customer wanted seven. To foster an extra hint of freshness, he lifted the spray bottle and covered the roses with a gentle cloud before setting them in an amber vase on the counter. A crate delivered from the quayside leaned against the workbench, its planks still smelling of salt and old rope. Lyle ignored the scent for now and reached for a copper ribbon spool whose shine would interact brightly with the soft petals.

As he guided the first rose into the moist foam, the ribbon slipped from his palm, struck the crate, and unrolled across the floor like a tiny river. He bent to retrieve it, but a mighty thud from the shifting crate jolted him; one loose board tapped the counter, tipping the vase. Water splashed over the ribbon, darkening its copper sheen. Lyle steadied the glass, then noticed the damp ribbon beginning to cling together. He tried to rewind the spool, yet each turn formed a tighter knot, and his fingers started to fidget at the tangled loops. The roses remained upright, but every passing second outside the cooler warmed their heads. He faced a choice: rescue the ribbon now or rush the bouquet back into cold air.

He slid the nearly finished arrangement into the cooler first, letting the chill reclaim the petals, then returned to the ribbon puddle. With calm pressure he pressed a towel along the wet loops, cut away the worst knot, and tied what length remained around the paper. The bow ended shorter than planned, and two rose heads sat slightly lower where the foam had softened, yet the colors still glowed beneath the amber lamp. Lyle pushed the crate farther under the bench, and the spindle found a dry perch beside the vase. A faint green scent hovered between cooler and counter.

他先把幾乎完成的花束推回冷櫃，讓寒意重新包住花瓣，接著回身處理緞帶水窪。壓上毛巾吸乾濕圈，剪掉最糟的死結，用剩下的長度繫住包裝紙。蝴蝶結比預期短，插花海綿變軟，兩朵花頭也稍微下沉，但在琥珀燈下色彩仍然亮麗。萊爾把木箱往工作台下推，讓緞帶軸落在乾燥處。一股淡淡的青草香停留在冷櫃與工作台之間。
