The diamond kite lifted, its bright span trembling against the sky, and the thin nylon ornament tied near the tail flicked like a pennant. Wind pushed harder; tension surged through the reel, and a perplexing jolt travelled into Griffon’s wrists. The handle, wound over itself during launch, froze halfway around. That jam appeared only once in a blue moon, yet now it locked the drum. Griffon braced his knees, leaned back, and tried to force a quarter turn. The knot that had been retied earlier in haste stretched unevenly, and the entire frame wobbled overhead.

He dropped to one heel, pinching the reel, but the wind slackened without warning. Slack line sagged, curved toward the grass, and a thistle snagged the string halfway down the slope. Griffon had to traverse the uneven turf fast; each stride sank a little as springy earth pushed back against his boots. Reaching the snag, he lifted the line above the spines with one hand while the other shook the reel free of the earlier jam. The gust returned, pulled the kite upright, and a small loop of grass seed twirled down the line, then drifted away on the breeze—nothing else followed. Hours later, after Griffon and his sibling had packed the snacks and walked home, dusk spread thin violet light across the hill. By evening, the kite lay folded beside the flat stone, and a ribbon of leftover string curled across the grass. A loose loop of line quivered lightly against the stone, shifting with each faint breath of wind toward the downslope.
