Only three curled strips of orange tape still clung to the thinning roll beside the bookshelf. Marco spotted the same colour echoing at every second joint of the marble run, a tidy rhythm across the floor. Dry paper scent drifted from the cut tube ends, mixing with vanilla traces that rose from a candle on the shelf. Beside them, an adult snipped fresh tubes at the supply pile, and each cut released a brief dusty whiff of cardboard. A basket of pale wool sat near the sofa; its lanolin tang marked where someone had paused their knitting earlier. That earthy smell often made Marco reminisce about thick camping rugs spread on damp grass.

The marble had already slowed where a tube sagged over slippery covers, even while the rolling glass released a faint mineral whiff. Joel crouched and slid a picture book beneath the weak spot; his shoulders lifted when the marble gained speed briefly. The covers shifted under gloss, pressing the carpet fibres flat, and a sour adhesive smell rose when the marble stopped again. Marco summoned Joel to the supply pile with a wave, and together they balanced a wooden block on top of the book. The new height seemed huge for such a small space; the marble shot forward, bounced, and leapt clear of the next tube. After a pause, a thin paperback was wedged under the block, chasing an extra millimetre and stirring dusty taste in the air.

The structure now towered like a narrow staircase, sweet lamp-warmed plastic mixing with the lingering adhesive tang. Lucia stepped in from the doorway; her intuition linked the tidy orange bands to earlier speed drops. She tapped the wooden block, and the loose block released a stale wood smell where it scraped the picture book. Marco inhaled the scent, slid the block aside, and the mid-section flattened just enough for the marble to whisper through. Orange bands still held each joint, yet without the block the run kept a shallow wave and saved speed. If the marble gains even more speed, it will possibly leap past the bowl again. The marble rolled again; its clatter drew a tiny echo inside the tubes, then dropped neatly into the bowl on the carpet. Joel was reaching for the thinning roll of tape, his fingers hovering just above the soft carpet.
