Removing a Paperback to Steady the Living-Room Marble Run -

English 原文
Larkin has sent this marble down the living-room run many afternoons without changing the setup.
The clack on the hardcover, the quick slide, and the turn rattle repeat the usual rhythm beneath his palms.
Today the rattle lands higher and brighter, and the gray cat’s ears tilt like small dishes.
Dinah sits at the supply pile, sorting blocks by height, her phone facedown beside the scissors.
Larkin kneels on the warm carpet patch, his shins press the pile, and his toes dig for balance.
On the book-and-block platform, a middle tube has sagged into a flat lane that drains the marble’s speed.
He wedges a thin paperback under that tube and holds the glossy cover down until the joint lifts slightly.
The marble clacks, then slows at the dip, so Larkin slides a short wooden block under the lifted spot.
The stack rises, and the tube begins to teeter, its weight shifting across the slick book cover under it.
He adds another strip of tape, longer this time, and presses his forearm along the tube to set the bond.
Warmth pools near the lamp, a cooler stripe rests past the couch, and a dry papery scent rides the cut ends.
The gray cat curls into a small mound by the landing bowl, tail flicking once when a draft reaches his fur.
A small plastic prism on the shelf throws a thin band of color across the ramp and onto Larkin’s wrist.
He tucks a folded card under the far edge, a footnote to the stack, until wood, paper, and tape press tight.
Supports jam edge to edge, an overcrowding of wedges leaves almost no flat contact, and the marble stalls before the drop.
“It sounds higher now,” Larkin says, chin close to the tube, and Dinah answers, “I hear it,” without lifting her hands.
He grips the thin paperback and slides it out from the crowded stack in one steady pull.
The tube drops a few millimeters, and the block and card meet it at two points with steady pressure.
Once the extra layer is gone, friction against wood increases, and the joint stops rocking under his light push.
He lowers his face, and the tiny dip near the landing zone redirects the glass line inward by a centimeter.
The familiar clack returns with a brighter edge, and the cat’s ears swivel while his paws stay planted.
Larkin releases from shelf height and tracks the weight through each shift until the marble spins inside the bowl.
