A finger-deep band of yellow remained in its well as Lyra drew the craft stick through the glossy surface. She aimed to mix one last green, yet every stroke left the pool shallower. A glass vase holding a colorful bouquet stood beside the tray, and its stems bent the light into pale stripes that slid over the paint. The test strip had been placed at the shaded end of the table, forcing a slow walk for every sample. Cool grey shadows pooled near that edge, turning the blue almost steel-colored whenever she glanced up. A measuring cup half-filled with rinse water waited beside a ceramic pot that would later hold basil; an adult nearby packed snacks for the afternoon field trip. The yellow well had been drained almost to its floor, so Lyra tipped the ice-cube tray, letting the warm plastic flex and guide the last drop toward an empty mixing cell.

Heat from the overhead bulb kept softening the liquid. As the yellow trickled, it touched the cooler blue, and a turquoise ribbon slipped over the divider into the waiting cell. Contact with the cooler pocket thickened the ribbon, forming a tiny ridge that rerouted the warmer flow toward the newspaper. The new stream struck the page with a faint splash, blooming outward in a translucent circle. If the lamp were higher, the movement would stay slow, yet the flow continued. Lyra slid a folded paper towel beneath the tray’s higher side, lifting it enough to halt the downhill run; the ridge held, and the pure blue stayed safe. A stray fleck, flung during the tilt onto the distant test strip, dried into a clear sea-green patch that matched the bouquet’s hidden leaves. Under the angled tray, a thin bead of colour glided across the newspaper toward that patch, shimmering each time the overhead fan stirred the air.
