The plastic tray had been scrubbed earlier, yet faint stains stayed inside several wells. When Quinn slid a craft stick into the blue well, a hidden ridge of leftover red near the edge bled upward, turning the tip violet. He tried to rinse the stick, but the water had been darkened by earlier mixes, and the wood surfaced brown. Scraping the softened fibres along a paper towel removed most of the tint, though it thinned the stick’s edge and left tiny flakes on the table.

The cat chirped, perhaps expecting a treat once the row looked complete. Quinn lined up the strip on the newspaper; the empty square needed a bright, grassy green to keep the timeline of shades even. Only a shallow pool of yellow remained; one misstep would finish it. He dropped a measured splash of blue into a fresh well and stirred. Under the bulb the colour matched his memory, yet a walk to the shaded end of the table revealed a cooler cast. Facing a second obstacle, he carried the entire tray closer to the window, letting daylight test the mixture, then used an untouched stick to add the last thread of yellow. A ghost tint had been locked inside the plastic for months, yet the blend advanced with quiet valor, overcoming that residue. The row that had been broken now showed seven joined colours as the cat watched; Quinn pressed the damp craft stick onto the blank square, leaving a narrow stripe of corrected green.
