'Who joggled that branch?' Jonas called as a blue-green apple spun across the grass and stopped beside his boot. Oona, halfway up the three-rung ladder under the fluttering canopy, scanned the bough but spotted only a fleeing squirrel. She reached for the last flawless apple, yet the damp soil swallowed the ladder feet, tilting the frame and forcing a descent. Beyond the gate a stone cottage, its roof hidden beneath silver-grey ivy, caught late sun while two rabbits paused like polite onlookers. Determined, Oona dragged the ladder onto firmer ground trodden by pickers; the top rung had been polished by years of quiet affection.

With the ladder steady, she clipped the apple, lowered it into the basket, and walked toward the sorting table near the gate. Warm skin on the sunlit fruit touched the cool steel pan, and within seconds a fine mist fogged the metal surface. Beads merged into a clear ribbon that slid toward the pivot, dripped onto the spring, and made the needle oscillate without resting. Moisture reached the notepad, nudged the pencil, and pears rocked against each other inside the basket, threatening bruises if the motion continued.

Oona unfolded a spare cloth from her pocket and laid it across the shivering pan, where the fabric caught every falling droplet. Heat spread through the weave, the mist cleared, and the needle finally held a number instead of sliding back and forth. She eased each fruit onto the ripe section, while the rabbits hopped away and sparrows lifted from the cottage gutter in bursts. She lifted the light ladder, walked back to the trunk, and set its feet onto a patch of dry earth. Against the bark, one side rail vibrated in a slow arc across lichen, carrying a faint tremor upward.
