"Jam first." Silas tapped the lid.

Zelda slid two stacked cups aside, their rims chiming while trapped air squeezed out with a brief squeak. The kettle hummed, and toast inside the toaster crackled in gentle bursts. A single flake had been trapped beneath the toaster lever, sizzling softly. Silas reached past the leaning cereal box for the honeydew jam jar wedged behind it. Cardboard rasped, then scraped when the box nudged a plate; flakes pattered down like dry sand. His tug rattled the napkin holder, spoons clinked inside their ceramic jar, and one spoon rang against the counter. He had hoped to overcome a hurdle no bigger than a sticky lid, yet the crowded counter answered with a choir of tiny collisions. Plates glided a millimetre across the wet ring the milk jug left, and the wall clock ticked on.

Zelda drew a slow breath, then took the plunge again. She braced the cereal box with her wrist while Silas eased the jar forward at a lower angle. Glass squealed on glass; the jam jar slid free, but the sudden release jerked his arm. Right then the toaster sprang with a metallic twang, and both slices bounced. Startled, Silas tipped the spoon jar; handles clattered, rolling into a shallow valley of loose flakes. One spoon rang off the cup stack, exposing a faded painting of a town square on the saucer below. He steadied himself, turned the jar clockwise the way their grandmother had always done, and the crusted lid finally gave with a muffled pop. Sticky glass still glistened under the lights, the kettle clicked silent, and microwave digits showed only minutes left. A thin tick from the wall clock persisted in the hush that followed.
