The toaster clicked alive, its slots lit from inside. Petra had already placed bread there, but her first goal was the toast topping. The nearest raspberry jar refused to turn; dried sugar had been holding the lid fast. She slipped a spoon handle under the rim as a lever, the cool metal catching a shaft of light. With a soft pop, the seal broke; the sudden release nudged the jar forward, and the gentle slope carried it against the milk jug. The jug slid, left a damp trail, and settled against the stacked cups; trapped rinse water spilled from between them and spread in a dim, wide sheet.

Jam secured yet milk spreading, Petra balanced speed with space. She lifted the cereal box, its cardboard face bright in the window’s full glow, and pressed its bottom edge into the advancing puddle. The box formed a low barrier; liquid slowed but toast now rose and landed hard, bouncing crumbs into the same shallow pool. Accepting half-sticky fingers, she wiped one hand on a folded napkin, then pressed the napkin’s dry corner under the jam jar to steady it.
