A sudden swell of cooler air slipped through an automatic door and flipped an information leaflet off the nearby bench. The brittle paper scraped the floor, skidding toward the corridor, so both sketchers stepped away to catch it before an approaching shoe creased it forever. During that brief absence, a programmed motor inside the case rotated the sculpture by a quarter turn, and the overhead spotlight shifted its beam. When Cora and Eli returned, the figure no longer resembled solid stone; light now crossed thin edges where stacked sheets met, revealing that the piece was pressed parchment, not mineral at all. Hairline gaps between layers formed tiny terraces; charcoal dust sank into their drawing’s earlier lines, darkening them. If they had returned sooner, the edges would have stayed pale, yet the change offered a fresh surface to explore. Eli angled the remaining stick sideways, allowing broad, soft contact to echo the new layered texture while Cora traced fine ridges with the sharper tip. Their sketch kept the first viewpoint but added fresh marks for the unexpected discovery, bridging two moments of seeing without erasing either.

Near the doorway, a guide lifted the rope barrier, and the waiting group shuffled across the shining tiles.
