The plastic lip of the bakery’s ticket dispenser gaped under the bright lamps. Inside, a single frayed cardboard core showed exactly where fresh paper numbers had once hung. Soren lifted the empty spindle with two fingers and peered into the amber light that spilled across stacked loaves. He had planned to buy two oat loaves and let the slicing machine cut them thin for the handcrafted model at home. The slicing machine accepted his loaf and carved even sheets that slid forward like overlapping leaves. Grain dust floated in the golden cabinet light and landed across the steel tray in a soft speckled line. The engineer inside him traced how each slice could brace a tower, exactly as the workshop manual at home illustrated. At self-checkout he eased the loaf into a paper sleeve and guided the cart to the scanner. The screen flashed once, then the barcode read true on the second pass without protest. Behind him the slicer kept its mellow drone, and warm oat fragrance drifted down the aisle toward the glowing produce bins.
