One Loaf Left Behind-

English 原文
The plastic lip of the bakery’s ticket dispenser gaped under the bright lamps. Inside, a single frayed cardboard core showed exactly where fresh paper numbers had once hung. Soren lifted the empty spindle with two fingers and peered into the amber light that spilled across stacked loaves. He had planned to buy two oat loaves and let the slicing machine cut them thin for the handcrafted model at home. The upcoming handcrafted model exhibition allowed nothing thicker than a matchstick, and bread sheets trimmed by steel blades met that rule. For the moment the counter area stayed calm, washed by a warm yeasty scent and the low hum of distant refrigerators.
A clerk hurried to load a new paper roll, but the entrance doors swung open and spilled parking-lot heat over polished tiles. Shoppers drifted steadily toward the counter, their carts rolling like slow drums against the broad floor seams. Soren glanced at the wall clock above aisle seven, which marked fifteen minutes before closing, ticking louder with each turn. When the clerk finally fastened the roll, crisp numbers fluttered forward, and Soren’s hand claimed ticket seventeen while another shopper pulled eighteen. He counted five customers ahead and timed the slicer’s slow rhythm, tapping his wrist carefully. After one breath he nudged the second loaf back, trusting the model bridge would stay firm with only one; he knew he might face the music if it sagged.
The slicing machine accepted his loaf and carved even sheets that slid forward like overlapping leaves. Grain dust floated in the golden cabinet light and landed across the steel tray in a soft speckled line. The engineer inside him traced how each slice could brace a tower, exactly as the workshop manual at home illustrated. At self-checkout he eased the loaf into a paper sleeve and guided the cart to the scanner. The screen flashed once, then the barcode read true on the second pass without protest. Behind him the slicer kept its mellow drone, and warm oat fragrance drifted down the aisle toward the glowing produce bins.
