In that gust, fresh seeds began to cascade over the lip, sliding like dry sand toward the ground scatter zone. Pigeons rushed forward, shoulders pumping, while smaller finches stayed frozen on lower branches, heads angled toward the tray. She gathered another scoop from the loosening bag, careful not to jolt the waiting birds. The paper bag felt lighter, and an insecure seam showed a thin crack near its bottom. Grain trickled through the widening slit, leaving a dotted trail across the warm bench seat. Emmet pinched the tear and rolled the edge twice until the leak stopped for good. Mae poured again; now two ribbons of seeds lay side by side, yet the tray still looked spare against the wide platform. She shook the final handful free, ignoring the stiff pull in her wrist, and spread every kernel across the empty corner. The three strips touched, merged, and at that instant the feeder floor showed one continuous carpet of grain.
