English 原文
A brass scale, a glass reservoir of pale oil, and a row of frost-white ceramic bowls occupied the wrapping counter. On the next shelf, colored ribbons intertwine above slim incense boxes; their silver edges caught the lantern’s faint blue glow. Cool air slid over the stone mortar at the back, carrying a faint citrus thread along the steel-grey wall. Soren traced a finger along an unlabeled bundle. Hazel lifted it closer to the entrance breeze that mixed cedar and pine. Near the doorway, an adult companion compared ribbon colours beside stacked gift boxes, leaving the two friends alone before the sample-burning tray. A miniature stone basilica, used as a bookend, leaned against the cedar row and shimmered under the lantern.
Soren had hoped to pair the mystery bundle with lavender ribbon for his aunt’s gift. Hazel, meanwhile, wanted a sharper scent to balance citrus peel she had already chosen for a friend. Both needed the single sample-burning tray, yet a glowing stick already smoked softly in its sand bed. They exchanged a glance; Soren stepped back, palms open, while Hazel waited for the thin coil of smoke to fade. If Hazel had lit her stick earlier, the draft from the door would have scattered the aroma across the aisle. Instead, she tapped the brass scale; its pointer twitched, revealing the beam had been nudged off balance. Soren slid the stone counterweight, and the needle returned to zero, buying both of them a few calm seconds.
When the smoke thinned, Hazel leaned forward and placed the mystery bundle on the tray. Soren tapped the ash gently, and a fresh ember brightened without sound. A salty note, like boards drying beside a harbor, threaded through the air and replaced the expected cedar. Coastal wood strands and inland petals had been bound tightly, forcing their scents to intertwine before either could stand alone. Soren nodded toward the lavender ribbon, and Hazel separated the bundle into two slimmer halves. Grey powder slid from the cuts, providing silent nourishment for the cooling ember. Hazel pocketed the half with the salty thread; Soren wrapped the floral half in tissue. A pale smear of ash remained on the tray’s rim where the bundle had rolled. Soren brushed the rim once with his sleeve, leaving a faint silver line across the blue-grey ceramic.
