"Hold the slate steady!"

Kent shifted his grip, yet the slab’s coarse surface grated across his fingertips as Noemi eased a flat phone onto it, aiming at a palm-sized pool on the upper shelf. The rock around them felt harsh and pitted, salt powder crunching under their knees, while an oystercatcher stalked a desolate patch a step away, its toes squeaking on the dry grit. Sunlight bounced off the water and threw a bleak flash into Noemi’s eyes, so she leaned forward, letting her own shadow cover the pool. The slate wobbled. A faint tremor ran through it, and the phone slid, nudging a round pebble. The pebble rolled, tapped a brittle shell ridge, and several empty mussel halves tumbled like slow dominoes toward the channel below. Before the last shell could fall, her palm dropped onto the phone, stopping the chain with a muffled thud.

A sudden clack cracked the air; a gull had dropped a mussel beside the dry observation rock where their notebooks lay. Shards skittered dangerously close to the sketches, so both siblings scrambled uphill, leaving the pool unwatched. While they brushed fragments away, the sea pushed higher. By the time they climbed back down, the tide line had crept over the slate, and a thin, ominous sheet of seawater lapped against its lower edge. The once-dry ledge now glimmered under a new film, and tiny bubbles popped as trapped air escaped through hairline gaps.

Noemi crouched, feeling cold water seep around her boots. She adjusted the slate into a firmer groove, using heavier pebbles that the rising water had loosened from a nearby crack. The wavering caustic patterns now danced closer to the phone lens, revealing how ripples carried specks of sand across the pool floor in quick bursts. She had hoped to record clear stillness, yet the moving sand itself turned into the lesson. The slate that had been dry a few minutes earlier now rocked gently on the swelling current, drifting millimetre by millimetre toward the deepening pool.

「把石板拿穩！」

肯特重新握住石板，但粗糙的板面仍磨得他指尖發疼；諾艾米把扁平的手機放上去，對準上層岩棚上一個掌大的水池。周圍的岩石凹凸不平、布滿鹽粉，兩人跪著時腳下傳來細碎的喀啦聲；一隻蠣鷸在一旁乾燥荒涼的岩面上踱步，爪子在沙礫上吱吱作響。陽光反射在水面上，射來一道灰白耀光刺進諾艾米的眼，她前傾身子，用自己的影子遮住水池。石板晃動，輕微的顫動透到她指尖，手機滑動，推到一顆圓卵石。卵石滾下，碰到一列脆貝殼，數枚空心貽貝殼像慢動作的多米諾骨牌般往下棚跌去。最後一枚還未落水，她的手掌啪地按住手機，終止了連鎖。

忽然一聲「喀」，海鷗把貽貝摔在離觀察用乾岩的筆記本旁。碎片濺到速寫本邊緣，兄妹倆急忙攀上去清理。等他們回到池邊，潮線已越過石板，薄薄一層海水拍在下緣。原本乾燥的岩面閃著新潮濕光澤，細氣泡沿著細縫噗噗冒出。

諾艾米蹲下，感到冰涼水漸漸漫到鞋底。她把石板重新卡進較穩的溝槽，再用潮水剛沖出的較重礫石壓緊。水面上晃動的光帶更貼近鏡頭，顯示細波如何把沙粒成束帶過池底。她原本想拍下平靜畫面，卻發現移動的沙本身就成了最佳題材。先前依舊乾爽的石板，此刻在升水的推力下輕輕搖晃，毫厘地向愈來愈深的水池滑去。
