Lyle rolled the rubber-ringed step-stool along the travel shelf and halted beside a clean gap between hardcovers. The library clock had ticked through its first closing announcement, yet he still had time. He had already checked the reading table, so he stretched both arms into the narrow space and tried to drag the atlas forward. The coarse cloth spine rasped against his palms, but the heavy book refused to budge; the row beside it pressed inward and held everything tight, as if defending the shelf’s integrity.

Bea, arranging note cards at the nearby study corner, noticed his stalled effort and passed her quilted jacket over for extra grip. With the padded fabric wrapped around the spine, Lyle pulled again, adding fresh vigor while twisting the weight slightly downward. The atlas lurched free at last, its lower edge knocking a line of slim pamphlets. Those flimsy covers fanned outward like falling dominoes, and their last corner clipped a wire basket filled with returned magazines. The metal frame rolled off the return cart, rattling across the soft carpet. For one hushed interlude, pages fluttered through the air before Bea slid a foot sideways and nudged the basket against the leg of the reading table, stopping its journey without disturbing other patrons.

Atlas in hand, Lyle stacked the scattered pamphlets back into a tidy row and set the basket upright on the cart. Overhead lights near the far wing dimmed for the fifteen-minute warning, and staff trolleys continued to glide between aisles. On the floor beside the table, a single glossy leaflet kept rocking gently inside the basket’s curved wall, tapping plastic against metal with each slow sway toward the rim.
