Luke waited beside the folding bench, arranging blank sheets like pieces from a silent jigsaw, while a faint rustle began to simmer through the grass below them. Stella had folded dozens of planes that morning, yet her latest design still curved left because one wing measured a finger-width wider than its partner. She slid a ruler under that wing, sharpened the line, and added a tiny paper clip for weight, then climbed back to the launch hilltop and sent the craft hissing toward the target.

The plane skimmed straight at first, but an exuberant gust nudged its nose, steering it into the ribbon tied to the wind-reading stick. The ribbon snapped sideways and flicked the top sheet from Luke’s neat stack. That loose page fluttered down the slope, landing flat and skidding over damp blades like a sled. Dew gathered against its underside, adding a watery filling that slowed the slide until the page lay heavy halfway to the goal. Luke broke into a trot, yet Stella signalled him to pause; the drifting sheet had already shown how moist grass could tame runaway weight. She hurried instead to the adjustment stone, pinched both tail corners of the waiting plane upward, and waited for the next lull.

A calmer breeze arrived, and she launched again. Mid-flight, a softer eddy rose from the field, lifting the plane just enough to clear the dew-dark sheet before dipping toward the chalk circle. The craft began to lose lift earlier than expected, so Stella stepped down the slope, stretching her arms to interrupt another possible ricochet. She leaned forward, palms open, while the tilted wings kept slicing the damp air toward her waiting hands.
