Luke pressed his palms against the cool ridged frame of the coral-window magnifying panel and eased it upward. The metal resisted, then rose a finger’s width before the stiff hinge held again. Two more finger-widths were still missing before the shrimp inside the reef would come into focus. A small gathering of visitors shifted behind him; damp shoes squeaked along the tile and the railing vibrated against Luke’s hip. He tried a second lift. This time the frame inched higher, but the angle still fell short, and a bead of condensed water rolled down the glass, dripping onto the floor.

The drop splashed onto Frida’s backpack, which lay open beside the wooden bench. A plush mongoose slid from the nylon pocket, bumped an alpaca figurine balanced on the bench edge, and both toy and figure skated across the shallow puddle. The mongoose struck a metal utensil from their lunch set—a spoon—sending the spoon gliding into the bracket that held the panel arm. The touch jarred the hinge just enough; the panel tilted those last few millimetres, and the reef suddenly sharpened like a picture seen through fresh lenses. If the hinge was any looser, the panel would dip too far, so Luke folded the laminated species card and wedged it under the arm as a stop.

Warm air from the overhead spotlight brushed the back of his hands while cooler mist drifted near his ankles, carrying the faint scent of steamed greens—the cooking method reminded him of science class experiments with water vapour. Visitors behind him leaned in for their turn, and Luke stepped aside, wiping wet palms on his shorts. Beside the bench, the spoon continued to spin slowly on its bowl, tracing a bright arc in the thin water; streaks left by his fingertips shone across the panel’s brushed steel and slipped downward toward the hinge.
