The ribbon spool squeaked along its metal axle, then fell silent as Thea lifted it from the track. Cool steel from the packaging bench pressed against her forearms. She bent a flat pastry box along each stiff crease. The cardboard edges felt grainy, and the first corner refused to stay folded, springing open despite her steady thumbs. She needed six mini fruit tarts to sit snugly for the evening potluck, so the box’s foundation had to measure up. Pressing again, she pinched the second corner. A shallow ridge formed, yet the opposite side still sagged, throwing the balance off centre. Her terrier, tied to the outdoor bench, tilted its head through the open takeaway window and watched, tail tapping the wooden slats.

The ribbon spool had been wound tightly earlier, its smooth satin layers hugging the core like stacked leaves. While she pressed the stubborn corner again, her elbow brushed the spool. It tipped, rolled across the cool bench, and struck a pile of unused boxes. The boxes slid forward, their glossy sides scraping against the steel lip of the bench. They nudged the small shelf that held the toothpick cup beside the empty sample plate. The shelf tilted just enough for the cup to wobble, clink, and rise onto one edge.

Sharp wooden sticks threatened to spill across the bench and scatter over the flour-dusted prep gap below. Just then, Thea’s parent stepped back from the entrance board, feet skimming the floor markings beneath the shelf. The light bump lifted the near edge and pressed the cup safely against the wall. Only a few toothpicks escaped, sliding over the steel surface before dipping through the narrow gap toward the tiled floor. The unexpected jolt also pressed her thumbs once more into the cardboard, forcing the side wall fully inward. All four corners now gripped one another, forming a frame sturdy enough to cradle six pastries. One slender toothpick continued to spin, tracing a widening circle toward the green floor marking beside her untied shoelace.

リボンのスプールは先ほどまできつく巻かれており、滑らかなサテンが葉の重なりのように芯を抱いていた。頑固な角をまた押さえたとき、彼女の肘がスプールに触れた。それは転がり、冷えた台を横切って使っていない箱の山に当たった。箱は光沢のある側面を擦らせながら前へ滑り、台の鋼の縁に引っ掛かった。それらは空の試食用皿の横で楊枝カップを載せる小棚をそっと押した。棚がわずかに傾き、カップがぐらりと揺れて縁に立ち上がった。

鋭い木の棒が台の上にこぼれ、粉を帯びた調理台とのすき間へ散らばりそうになる。ちょうどその時、入口のボードを読んでいたテアの親が後ろへ一歩下がり、足が棚の下の床マークをかすめた。その軽い衝突で棚の近い側が持ち上がり、カップは壁に寄り掛かって安定した。抜け出した数本の楊枝だけが鋼面を滑り、狭い隙間を通ってタイル床へと落ちていく。予期しない衝撃は彼女の親指も段ボールに再び押し付け、側面を完全に中へ折り込んだ。四隅は互いにしっかり絡み、六個の菓子を支える枠を形づくった。細い楊枝が一本だけ回転を続け、緑の床マークへ向かって広がる円を描きながら進んでいった。
