Across the room, the glaze shelf glimmered under turning fan-shadows, releasing porridge-like sweetness and dry flint bitterness from the numbered tiles. They timed their taps with each pulse from the insect, rotating bowls and letting the woody dowel kiss the rims one by one. When a suspicious tone surfaced, they compared it to the steady chirp, then set that piece aside for the instructor to revisit. Kay and Max worked in camaraderie, striking bowls during thoughtful pauses between chirps until suspect pieces revealed themselves with muffled lows.
