Four neat signatures filled the sign-in sheet; the fifth line waited beneath the swinging chain of the reception pen. Dorian pressed the clipboard against the form-filling table, and the ceiling’s blue-white glow turned the paper a cool steel shade. He needed to rewrite one mistyped date that the receptionist had circled in red. The ballpoint only scratched a pale groove. He rolled it between his palms like a paintbrush stirring fresh colour, then dragged longer strokes across the box. A thin ribbon of ink appeared, paused, and vanished. Footsteps squeaked along the hallway, and a magazine on a nearby seat lay open to an article describing a distant political ultimatum; its pages fluttered each time the entrance doors parted and a draft slipped inside.

He angled the pen lower for one more try. The barrel slid from his fingers, struck the rim of the pen cup, and bounced onto a stack of clipboards. The top board glided forward, tapped a palm-sized wooden cabin that advertised holiday vaccines, and the little model tipped over. Its roof brushed the number-ticket dispenser; the spool whirred free, spilling pink tickets across the linoleum. An overjoyed squeal burst from a toddler by the entrance as the paper ribbons skated outward. The child gleefully chased a curling strip while Dorian lunged and steadied the dispenser, bringing the tumble to a halt. From under the cabin rolled a short-handled paintbrush, its bristles still carrying a bead of blue-grey paint. He set the silent brush beside his form and watched. A slow ribbon of colour crawled toward the circled date, spreading across the page in a wavering line.
