The jar wobbled, tipped, and a clear ribbon ran across the tabletop. The ribbon met the page, lifted the still-wet paint, and carried loose pigment toward the edge like tiny rafts. At the point where the table met the lamp’s metal foot, the thin stream split, one branch soaking the printed call-number slips Wyatt had stacked earlier.

He thrust the folded sleeve of his hoodie against the spreading pool, the fabric drawing water with steady tension. With his free hand he angled the pad, guiding the remaining trickle into an empty plastic lid rescued from his pencil case. Paint streaks blurred into soft fans across the crosswalks, turning the diagram into a blotchy burst that looked less like careful mapping and more like free artistic expression. The library lights dimmed for the fifteen-minute warning, so Wyatt left the new texture untouched and slid the damp page onto the return cart for drying. A thin bead of coloured water slid from the hoodie cuff and dropped into the lid, spreading outward in slow concentric rings.
