Tin Moose and the Empty Hook-

English 原文
Six metal feed buckets, four stiff brushes, and six grain scoops hung in alternating stripes along the grain shed wall. Their repeating order—bucket, brush, scoop—bucket, brush, scoop—lined the rough boards like neat stitches across a burlap coat. Above them, a narrow wooden balcony pushed from the loft, its rail brushing the curved vault that framed the dusty rafters. The planks had been sanded smooth long ago, yet their edges still left faint splinters whenever a shoulder grazed them. Ronan curled his cold fingers around the nearest bucket; the handle felt gritty near the hook and icy at its steel curve. A tiny tin ornament shaped like a moose hung from that handle and knocked softly against the bucket as he lifted.
Mud gripped his boots near the trough, then released them where the path climbed a gentle elevation beside the rabbit cages. He eased the bucket onto the stool; the metal rim left a cool ring against the polished seat. Pressing the wire latch, he felt swollen timber resist, and the door refused to shift more than the width of a thumb. He nudged again, wood trembling, when a hollow thud rolled from the goat pen and the farm dog barked twice in reply. The goats had nosed their manger aside. One goat's horn had caught the gate, so Ronan jogged over, shoulder brushing flanks while he eased the bar onto its peg. The dog flopped onto the cool concrete by the pump, tail sweeping grit, and stillness returned. Sunlight had climbed above the loft balcony by the time Ronan walked back to the hutches.
The wire felt firmer now, not spongy; with one steady pull the latch slid clear and the door glided open. Inside, soft fur brushed his knuckles while he pressed dry hay into the rack and sprinkled the chopped greens below. The door swung shut and caught cleanly, the earlier swelling reduced to a hard shell by the rising warmth. Back in the grain shed, the neat sequence along the wall carried a sudden gap. That empty space drew his eyes to the bucket still in his grasp and quietly confirmed every other job was finished. If the latch stuck again, he would simply bring a drop of oil next time. He hooked the bucket back onto its stripe, and the tin moose clinked, knocking one loose grain straight into the dog's waiting mouth. Ronan scratched the dog's warm neck.
