English 原文
The corridor’s polished floor felt grainy under Gwen’s shoe soles, as though fine grit had replaced the usual wax during lunch break. A dry-sweet mix of bulletin-board paper and plastic marker caps drifted through the air, edging into her mouth like mild chalk. She walked toward the supply closet to collect two reams before the bell. The sliding door rasped open but jammed halfway; stale paper scent rolled out with a hint of warm glue. Several glue-sealed cartons had been stacked against the inner wall, narrowing the shelf space even more. If the panel moved smoothly, the errand would finish in seconds, yet the stiff metal stayed still. Gwen leaned back, fingers damp from humidity, and pulled; the tug shook loose a dusty cricket whose peppery odor pricked her nose like ground spice. The startled insect hopped into a plastic cup; clips rang against tin, but the paper packs behind the gap refused to move.
Gwen steadied her breathing, noticing a woody note, almost like old buffalo leather she had admired during last week’s museum visit. She altered nothing except her grip: the heel of her hand pressed lower, shoulder braced harder, and the small knot in her headphone cord was tucked under her collar so it would not catch. The changed angle coaxed the panel another finger’s width; her arm slid through, allowing her to cradle one smooth ream against her side. The movement brushed a resting moth, and the powdery creature burst out, leaving a bitter, papery taste in the air. Jarvis, refilling marker bins nearby, flinched as the moth skimmed his ear; his elbow struck the drinking-fountain button, and a band of cool, metallic-tasting water arced across the floor. Gwen stepped over the spreading puddle and pressed the button again; the stream stopped with a soft hiss. At the same moment on the upstairs landing, the art teacher’s daughter skipped past an open window, and another moth spiraled along the breeze toward silent library shelves.
