English 原文
Two pale tracks curved across the cloudy ice; Ian’s boots had scraped only midway, then paused when a twig rattled onto the rink from the gritty border. A low chorus of adult talk drifted near the red-brick hospice whose sun-warmed wall absorbed every light footfall with a muffled thud. A weekend youth scheme meant to broaden horizons had left coloured pebbles along the pavement, and their tiny clinks answered each gust. Ian now set a stainless tumbler upright at centre ice as a target; the metal rang once, sharp and clear, then vibrated with a thinner after-tone. Holly waited beside the pebble line, her breath clicking in quick bursts. Ian pushed off. His soles hissed, the hidden leaf knocked his right boot sideways, and the tumbler rolled, chiming against the twig before both objects skidded toward the thinnest edge, where a soft crackle streaked outward in a pale fan.
The collision woke a second chain. The twig tapped the stiff glove, the glove brushed the pebble offerings, and those three stones pattered together—tick-tick-tick—until their weight met a film of meltwater that had been warmed earlier and had been spreading in silence. A dull pop travelled underfoot; ice flexed, and Ian’s heel plunged ankle-deep with a splash that echoed like poured syrup inside a drum. Water dripped from his laces in steady beats while he retreated to the stone border. Holly had already gained insight from the earlier sounds: the zones where cracks overlapped gave a deeper, solid tone. She stepped onto that firmer lane, her boots sliding with a thin shush, reached the rolling glove, and pressed the twig flat to block any farther travel. The tumbler still whirled in a wavering circle beside her, and she kept pressing the twig against the ice while the cup drifted away toward the far bank.
