Encouraged, Rosa fetched a second support, thicker again, and pressed it over the first addition, raising the column above her waist. The extra height caught the breeze; wind funneled through a narrow gap between two sage bushes and shoved the wobbly top forward. The flamingo-striped pebble skipped off, struck the gravel, and rolled downhill. That impact jolted a larger round stone, which bumped into a loose ridge of pebbles; several scattered farther, clicking off one another until only faint rattles drifted away. Rosa hurried after the runaway but glimpsed the tower leaning, each layer now sliding toward the downslope edge.

Back beside the cairn, she crouched and pinched the middle of the two new supports. The thicker stone came free with a gritty scrape; its weight left the lower layers able to nest together. Freed of that burden, the tower eased upright again, the flamingo-pebble slot now clear for a gentler finish later. Seth lowered his camera, yet Rosa signaled everything remained steady, so he stepped aside to frame the ochre hillside instead. The jay fell quiet; only dry earth shifted where the cascade had run. Farther down the trail, a stray pebble pattered against gravel, continuing its slow slide into the shaded scrub.
