Chimes in Sudden Silence-

English 原文
The strip of bark under Margot's thumb felt slick, not coarse, as though a talon slid there and polished a slim groove. A bent spoon, a clay disc, and two wooden beads rocked beside her shoulder, strings grazing her sleeve in the mild breeze. She looped a cotton string around a heavy brass key, testing its edge against her palm before lifting it toward the branch. The key felt cool and dense, yet its weight might muffle the light shell already hanging nearby. She nudged the shell; the spoon rang bright, but the shell answered with only a dull tremor. Ben sat on a blanket near the supply box, turning a page while small pliers rested by his side.
Across the hedge, a musician rehearsed on a bassoon; the air began to pulsate with every deep note. The low tone rolled under the branch like slow thunder, shaking loose a dry leaf. The vibration startled a small hawk overhead. The raptor dipped, then landed on the sunlit grass just beyond the listening position. Margot stepped to the quiet spot behind the trunk, her hands staying clear of the dangling metal. A slow minute passed; the hawk lifted and glided toward distant roofs. When she returned to the branch, the breeze had shifted, and the brass key now pressed against the shell, holding it silent.
She traced the slick groove again and noticed its curve matched the hawk’s narrow talon. What first looked random now resembled a tiny history etched into bark. Sun warmed her wrists while the shade cooled her ankles. Instead of pulling the key away, she wedged a short wooden bead between metal and shell, trying to reconcile their clashing tones. If the wind grew stronger, the spacer would keep each piece free to swing. Inside the open window beyond the hedge, the distant musician breathed once more, and a closing bassoon note rolled across the yard. Margot slid the heavy key a finger’s width farther from the shell.
