English 原文
A bright ping rang from the bent spoon, and at the same instant a scarlet ladybird tapped onto the spinning bottle-cap chime beneath the branch. The insect’s tiny wing cases rattled like rice in a tin before it folded them away, turning silent while wind nudged the other hanging pieces. Reed crouched in the cool shade, the rough bark humming faintly under his knuckles, while an adult nearby turned pages of a book with a soft papery hush. The supply box lay open beside a blanket; its string coils rubbed against shells and wooden beads. One clay disc showed scratches that had recorded earlier feelings of joy, pale lines bursting outward like sunbeams. Reed brushed a finger along the spoon to express gratitude for its clear ring, then slipped behind the trunk to the quiet-comparison spot where only the sprinkler’s distant hiss broke the stillness.
A gust returned, and the bottle cap merely spun, never striking its neighbour. Resolving that mute whirl meant adding weight, so Reed tied one narrow bead to the cap’s tail. The knot took time; he had to work through a tangle that the adult had trimmed away earlier. Test: a light clack, yet the cap still twirled. He fetched a second bead; if the knot slipped, it would vanish into the grass, so he doubled the loop. Now two beads thudded, but the spin refused to quit. A third object—a small shell—waited in the box. Three holes had been punched along its rim by the adult’s pliers, giving Reed an easy grip. He clipped it on, stepped back to listening position, and the added mass tipped the balance; the cap swung sideways and struck the spoon once. The ring blurred, so Reed widened two strings to let spoon and lid put aside differences. At that moment the ladybird lifted off, its wings scraping a tremolo before it drifted into sunlight, and the note that followed rang clean, finally able to resolve a conflict between metal and air. Reed nudged the bottle cap, and the new low chime hovered in the warm hush left by the receding wind.
