English 原文
The turnstile bar felt strangely warm against Jonas’s hip, even though a sharp morning shadow sliced across its steel skin. A red blink flared on the card reader and the bar froze; the fare screen showed three white digits, two cents above the amount stored on his card. Bright strips overhead threw a glare onto the recharge machine’s glass, so he could count each coin before slipping them into the slot. The first handful rang inside, and green numbers climbed, but stopped one cent short of the threshold. He had emptied every visible pocket, and the bar stayed locked.
Dim reflections wavered along the tiled floor as the automatic doors opened and closed behind him. A pigeon bobbed near the bench where Wren, earbuds in, sat listening to music; the bird became Jonas’s silent partner in crime, pecking at anything that glimmered. Its beak nudged a lone coin resting in pooled darkness beneath the bench. Jonas crouched, fingers brushing the cold tile until the silver edge caught a shaft of light. He straightened, fed the coin into the machine, and watched the total creep upward—still a single cent short. Over the vending machine, a paper cup tilted; a serendipitous drip of coffee fell, then another, forming a tiny quagmire that began to slide across the glossy surface.
When the next door pulse sent a gust along the hall, the thin stream spilled over the lip and raced toward the recharge machine. Brown liquid chased a candy wrapper, then spread across the footpath, reflecting the orange digits of the departure board like a muddy riverbank at sunset. Jonas spotted one last coin half hidden under the machine’s shadow-edge; a loose thread on his jacket sleeve started to unravel as he stretched, but his fingertips closed on the metal disk. The moment it clinked inside, the screen flashed the missing cent and the gate light flipped green. He dropped a napkin to block the creeping coffee, and a faint ripple continued to advance beneath the soggy paper edge.
