English 原文
Greta raised her boot toward the flat rock beside the trail, yet Amos’s muddy heel already pressed its slick surface. A wobble ran through the stone, and cold water squished against their soles where the foundation soil had turned paste-like. Its flat surface had been worn smooth by many boots, leaving a polished patch that offered little grip. They shared a quick nod, then stared at the knee-high log ahead, moss glistening like soap under the steady drizzle. Crossing it required another step, high enough to keep their shins clear of the sponge-soft bark that would slide under weight. Greta bent, fingers sinking into rough grit, and coaxed a slab of bark debris free for a first layer.
Raindrops thickened, slicking the moss, so Amos pulled a rounded stone from debris and set it atop the bark. The pile rose midway to the log; if rain soaked it longer, the stack would tip again. She had hoped one more layer would finish the job, so she searched the soggy approach for another piece. A vine with tight spiral growth clung to the root plate; Greta peeled a soil-caked length, underside rigid like leather. They stretched the vine across the stack and pressed the stone; bark, stone, and vine fused under combined weight. Heat from the dry underside of the trunk drew tiny beetles up; Greta’s shove scattered them across the moss. A robin swooped, snapping at the dots; its wings beat ferns, and a brittle branch flipped onto the stack. The extra weight pushed the pile a centimetre, bringing its top flush with the slippery log.
Before more creatures joined the commotion, Amos nudged the branch aside, and the robin darted into the canopy gap. Greta stepped onto the improvised platform, toes gripping the rough vine; one strong push carried her over to the drier far side. She had been certain the stack would slip again, yet it held, anchored by bark texture and the cooled mud beneath. As Amos followed, his boot dislodged a thin stem between stones; crushed leaves released a bright scent of flowers and fennel. The fragile aroma drifted across the puddle, mingling with cool rain that kept tapping the freshly packed platform.
